Doreen is an author, teacher, and an artist who drew so much as a child she likes to say that she was born with a pencil in her hand. She also feels a deep connection to words, books, and libraries, that is rooted in her childhood. Doreen is an art teacher for mostly children of twenty-eight years, and the co-founder of a Hudson Valley group for children’s authors and illustrators and a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators.
Her writing for children has been published in FrostFire Worlds, Stinkwaves, Story Shack, Short Stories for Kids, Schooldays, Mouse Prose, K12Academics, Hot Chalks Lesson Page, Rainbow Rumpus, Artsonia, Kinderarts, Pack-O-Fun’s Art Smarts feature, and in PARENTGUIDE News. Her illustrations have appeared in Stinkwaves Magazine, Crow Toes Quarterly, Berry Blue Haiku, Guardian Angel Kids, and Storytime.
Doreen has been awarded a certificate of completion from the Institute of Children's Literature, a bachelor of arts in English with honors, and a master of arts in Art Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. She studied art and literature at Scuola Lorenzo de'Medici in Florence, Italy, and her art has been exhibited at the Queens Museum of Art, The Crocker Art Museum, The Williamsburg Art and Historical Center, and in numerous galleries. She presently teaches art to middle graders through Project Enrich of WSWHE BOCES and SUNY Ulster. She is also a member of Kappa Delta Pi, international honor society in education, and the Arts Society of Kingston.
Doreen loves the natural world and grew up with her pick of three tree houses to play in, two fields, and a pond to swim and skate across. She's also prone to the wanderlust of travel, and was blessed with seven glorious months to explore Italy. Doreen makes her home in the scenic and inspiring region of the Hudson Valley of upstate New York.
